Spinal Decompression

Spinal Decompression Q&A

What is spinal decompression?

Spinal decompression is a technique that uses gentle, steady pressure to stretch the spine and reduce or eliminate painful symptoms associated with bulging or herniated discs.

How does spinal decompression work to treat herniated discs?

Bulging or herniated discs cause painful symptoms including back pain and pain or numbness that radiates into the arms or legs. Pain develops when the portion of the disc that has become herniated or squeezed presses against nerve roots near the spine. When a disc is ruptured, the gel-like material from inside the disc can leak out, causing additional irritation to the nerves. The spinal decompression technique uses a special device to apply constant and consistent pressure to your spine, gently stretching the spine and expanding the space between the bones of the spine (the vertebrae) so discs that have slipped out of place are able to return to their normal positions.

What is the spinal decompression treatment like?

During treatment, you'll lie flat on a special table and soft straps will be attached to your body. The table will do the “work” of decompressing the spine, gently stretching your back so the vertebrae and discs can become properly aligned and pain and other symptoms can be relieved. Dr. Lichy will perform a complete exam and evaluation prior to spinal decompression so your treatment can be customized to your specific needs.

Can spinal decompression help me avoid disc surgery?

Yes, several studies have shown decompressing the spine can help many patients relieve the symptoms of disc herniation without the need for invasive surgical techniques. Many patients benefit from followup treatment with stretching, exercise and lifestyle changes such as adopting better posture or using a more supportive mattress to help strengthen back muscles and avoid future injury.
