Sound familiar?

When a lumbar brace can help

An acute low back flare-up

When the back seizes up, a brace can give enough support to keep moving through the day instead of lying down.

Disc problems

Patients with a herniated or bulging disc often find a brace eases the load while they go through care.

Lifting and physical jobs

Movers, nurses, contractors and warehouse staff use a brace for extra support during heavy days.

Long commutes and desk days

Sitting for hours loads the lower back. A brace reminds you to sit tall and takes some of the strain.

Returning to sport

A brace can add confidence while you rebuild strength after a back injury.

Pregnancy-related back pain

Maternity support belts are a related option for prenatal patients, which Dr. Lichy can discuss with you.

How it works

How a brace fitting works

1. A real exam first

Dr. Lichy examines your lower back and decides whether a brace will actually help. A brace is a tool within a plan, not the whole plan.

2. We check your insurance

Bring your insurance card. If your plan includes a durable medical equipment benefit, your brace may be covered. We tell you before you're fitted.

3. Fitted to you

You're measured and fitted in the office so the brace sits in the right place and is snug without being uncomfortable.

4. Wear it the right way

Dr. Lichy shows you when to wear it and when to take it off, so your own muscles keep doing their job. Most patients use it for short periods, not all day.

Results vary from person to person. Dr. Lichy will tell you honestly what he expects for your situation and when to see a medical specialist instead.

Common questions

Lumbar brace FAQ

What does a lumbar brace do?

It supports the lower back and limits painful movement, which can help with stability, mobility and pain relief while you recover. Results vary, and it works best alongside care and exercise.

Is a back brace covered by insurance?

Often, if your plan includes durable medical equipment (DME) coverage. Bring your insurance card and we'll check your benefit before you're fitted. Call 212-534-5656 or text 646-829-6801 to ask ahead.

Will wearing a brace weaken my back?

Not when used as directed. Dr. Lichy shows you when to wear it and when to take it off, and pairs it with simple exercises so your own muscles stay strong.

How long should I wear it each day?

It depends on your situation. Many patients wear it for lifting, long sitting or flare-ups, and take it off for rest. Dr. Lichy gives you a plan.

Can I get one the same day?

Often yes, after your exam and insurance check. Walk-ins are welcome and same-day visits are usually available.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Walk-ins are welcome and same-day visits are often available. We're open Monday to Thursday until 7 pm. You can also book online or text us to pick a time.
